AutomotiveCars › What Is The Motability Scheme?

Now a days it is widely recognised that a vehicle is essential for many of us. In fact once you have a car you’ll wonder how you ever managed without one. However for someone that is disabled having a vehicle that allows them to get out and about is even more essential. In fact, even having a car you can rely on if you are a carer for someone that is disabled is vital.

The Motability Scheme was launched in 1977 and helps people use their Government-funded mobility allowance to get a car – or even a powered wheelchair or scooter.

There are different car manufacturers that take part in The Motability Scheme to help as many disabled people as possible have the independence of being able to get around with a vehicle.
Vauxhall are one of the leading car manufacturers that take part in this scheme – with a whole range of cars that are suitable for disabled drivers. In fact many of the vehicles that they offer under this scheme can be adapted if needed to make them more suitable and tailored towards the person that is going to be driving it.

Who Is Entitled To It?

Anyone on the higher rate Disability Living Allowance
Anyone who receives a War Pensioners Mobility Supplement

What is important to remember is that these cars are tailored towards disabled drivers. This means that they can easily be adapted to suit those people who wouldn’t be able to drive a normal car. What you might be surprised by is just how many adaptions’ can be made to a car in order to make it perfect.
As the scheme has been in existence for over 30 years it has plenty of experience which helps to make it as user friendly as possible. In fact now you don’t even have to be the driver yourself. If you are a disabled person with a carer then you can nominate them to have a car on your behalf and if you have a disabled child over the age of 3 then you can apply for a vehicle on their behalf.
